[mapguide-internals] MapGuide RFC 55 - Switch fromPROJ4toCS-Mapcoordinate system library

Hugues,

Thanks for the clarification. Two questions:

1) Considering that CS-Map will get heavily reused between OSGeo and
commercial applications, will it get it's own OSGeo namespace (in both
physical, i.e. wiki/project - and coding terms)? Or it's already considered
as an exclusive part of MGOS? I guess FDO is another candidate for adopting
CS-Map internally, at least where providers need some WKT validation while
instantiating CRS definition within datastore. Also WMS/WFS providers come
to mind.

2) Are there managed wrappers for CS-Map?

Regards,
Maksim Sestic

Hi Maksim,

Jason is right
Autodesk MapGuide Enterprise and Autocad Map will remain the same.
The CS-Map code that was written by Mentor Software Inc which was acquired
last year by Autodesk is the one that was recently posted on OSGEO. If this
RFC is approved, MapGuide open source as well as Autodesk MapGuide
Enterprise and Autocad Map will use the same copy of CS-Map.
So, from an Autodesk MapGuide Enterprise and Autocad Map, end user's point
of view there will be absolutely no change.

Hugues

:-) Thanks Jason, it's much more clear now. BTW, way to go!

Maksim,

Mentor==CS-Map (one is the company name, the other is the library) so there
should be no issues.

Jason

Hi all,

Aside from potential extra work at existing sites, is there any information
on how switch from PROJ4 toCS-Map might affect Autodesk MapGuide Enterprise
developers - in correlation with Map 3D which, if I recall right, utilizes
Mentor library for CRS management? Since RFC is obviously funded by
Autodesk, I presume they're also heading for some sort of unified CRS data
access, based on OSGeo solution (?) There's no rumors/info on it on ADN
channels either.

Maksim Sestic

Hi,

I have three comments here...

 1) Excellent! - I think this is a great opportunity but...

 2) I am concerned that this is a major update and that for existing sites
there will need to be a migration similar to the DBXML upgrade from 1.2 to
2. This means that for 2.x sites there will be a (possibly) considerable
amount of authoring layers and maps. For those of us just looking for an
Opnera/FF3 compatible release this major migration is going to cause some
effort, certainly worth it in the long-run but can there be a final 2.0.2
release before committing to CS-Map in 2.1?

 3) Based on the size of the SVN for CS-Map - there are some support files
of 10s of MB - how will the installer be built? Will there be a seperate
download for the additional support files? The 'Dictionaries' folder is
about 300MB uncompressed.
