What version of MapGuide are you running? Are you building it yourself?
We just added multi-line label support to the AJAX viewer a few weeks
ago, and it will be in the next release.
Unless you're building MG yourself there's currently no way to make it
work with both viewers. With the next release though any of the
following will be interpreted as a line-break:
"\n" (char 92 + char 110)
\n\r (char 13 + char 10)
\r\n (char 10 + char 13)
\n (char 13)
\r (char 10)
So pick your favorite and just use that for now.

I've just tried this and yes it now works for the DWF viewer. But now,
the situation has reversed. The AJAX viewer now treats it as the string
"\n" instead of the control character.
Is there a solution that can work with both viewers?

Use "\n" (2 characters) in your label string, not '\n' (the control
character).
