Thanks for this- I hadn't realised that using Base Layers would make a difference (should read the manual I suppose). It did help.

Have you tried assigning your raster data to a Base Layer?  Base layers 
are tiled, with the tiles generated on demand.  When generating the 
tiles your raster data will get read, but as your tile cache gets 
populated there will be less of a need to access the data, and you 
should see better performance. 

It's an option worth trying.

I am looking for ways of increasing the performance of raster display in 
MapGuide. Is it possible to create something like a tile index, so that
