SetFilter with special characters...

Hello all,
 
I'm running into some grief with trying to set a filter for values that
contain special characters, specifically the ampersand character.
 
ie.
 
($rest = 'A & W')
 
$opts->SetFilter("REST_NAME = '$rest");

I have tried 'escaping' it, substituting it with "&" and not having
much luck.
Any help is greatly appreciated.
