Buffer tool in the AJAX viewer

Has anyone been able to get the buffering to work in the AJAX viewer.  No matter what value I put in the distance and no matter what unit of measure I choose, it just makes the same big red buffer that takes up the whole map.   Does this not work in the AJAX viewer?
