There are quite a few developer resources that will help you get started with your quest to place a point on the map (and beyond).

First, load the Sheboygan sample and the Php Sample App from the Downloads page. At least two of the samples in the PHP app include placing pushpins. These are located at the bottom of this page:
https://mapguide.osgeo.org/downloads.html <https://mapguide.osgeo.org/downloads.html>
under the heading "Samples for MapGuide Open Source 1.0.x". Ignore the .Net and Java sample apps.

Next, download the Developers Guide (PDF version is best) and the sample code from the Documentation page:
https://mapguide.osgeo.org/documentation.html <https://mapguide.osgeo.org/documentation.html>

Finally, visit this site, for some more advanced developer examples (with links to source code):
http://data.mapguide.com/mapguide/devguide/index.php <http://data.mapguide.com/mapguide/devguide/index.php>
and it looks like Andy still has an unofficial copy of those samples for download available here:
www.spatialgis.com/devguide_june_2006_samples.zip
