Hi,

The main difference at this day, is first of all, MGE 2008 is a commercial
final version of MGOS 1.2, meanwhile MGOS 1.2 is still on Release Candidate
Status (Not Final).

The extra commercial non-open source providers that comes with MGE 2008 are
Autodesk Raster Provider, Autodesk SQL Server Provider and Autodesk Oracle
Provider.

So if you want to connect to an Oracle Database from MGOS you must use King
FDO Provider for Oracle, this provider is more less similar to the
commercial one except by the ability of create Feature Joins.

The Raster Provider for MGOS is not included with MGE 2008, MGOS uses GDAL
Raster Provider and MGE 2008 uses Adsk Raster Provider, the main difference
is that Adsk Raster Provider enable drag and drop functionality if you
create your map with MapGuide Studio 2008.

Also you can Install MGOS or MGE 2008, on Windows 2000, Windows 2003,
Windows XP Pro or Windows Vista, the only issue working with XP Pro, is that
the number of simultaneous connections using IIS is 4 so MGOS/MGE will work
as a personal edition, you can bypass this issue either installing MGOS/MGE
with the Bundled Server (Apache) or increasing the number of max connections
in IIS more details
http://wiki.osgeo.org/index.php/MapGuide_Open_User_Technical_FAQ%27s .

Installing MGOS/MGE on Windows Vista only works if you choose Bundled Server
instead of IIS, because MGOS/MGE is not ready for IIS 7.0, only works with
IIS 5.x or 6.0.

Installing MGOS/MGE on Windows x64 is possible with IIS applying a
workaround more details :

See this page: http://bugs.php.net/bug.php?id=33606&edit=1 near the bottom 4
or so posts for how to enable 32 bit on 64 bit compatibility mode.
cscript %SYSTEMDRIVE%\inetpub\adminscripts\adsutil.vbs SET
W3SVC/AppPools/Enable32bitAppOnWin64 1

If using the Windows "Run" dialog doesn't work. Navigate to the location of
"ADSUTIL.VBS" on your computer (Default: C:\Inetpud\AdminScripts) and create
a batch file with the following line: CSCRIPT ADSUTIL.VBS SET
W3SVC/AppPools/Enable32bitAppOnWin64 1 Save the batch file and run it to
correct the issue with IIS failing to run 32-bit applications.

Hi,

aside from being installed in a different directory, the
installations are largely identical. MGE itself is identical, except
that it uses a commerical projection library and comes with a couple
of extra FDO providers that are not distributed as open source (there
are open source alternatives, however).

You can install MGOS server and web extensions on the same machine.
We have successfully run them on fairly modest windows XP machines.
MG has a 'bundled' installation option that installs the Apache web
server, this is convenient if you don't want to mess with IIS (but of
course you can't use the .Net extensions for development then).

Cheers

Paul
