That's true (for IE too) but it's not really something that we want to
force our users to do.

Primarily, this is because it's over most of my clients' heads.
Secondarily, if we have them do this then we are pushing our accepted
increase in this standard out to all of the other sites that this user
visits.

Maciek, it might be worth setting this value locally to see if you do
get an apparent performance increase.  Theorerically you should, but
your current choke point might be something like map composition on the
server.

I think the number of connections is configurable in Firefox. Navigate
to about:config and search for the
"network.http.max-persistent-connections-per-server" setting. It
defaults to 2, but can be bumped up. Not sure if it would actually work,
since I haven't verified it.
