[mapguide-users] RE: MapGuide Open Source Web Studio

I'm neither a purist nor the other extreme... The input is definitely
appreciated. I am in the process of assessing it's capabilities and if
it has a place in an overall solution.

The issue at hand is I haven't really seen MapGuide fit my purpose; I
haven't even set it up with my data yet. I haven't gotten off the
ground. So I'm not convinced yet that it's worth the $495 as of yet to
invest when I haven't really gotten much usability out of it to begin
with. I agree, though, in the sense that ultimately we will have
multiple solutions depending upon client needs and this will inevitably
mean some open source and some other invested software. The idea is to
keep that to a minimum as you would probably imagine. If we could have
one open-source alternative and one other type that would be ideal.

Unfortunately we have something pretty advanced with MapServer currently
and so when looking at MapGuide I basically was interested to explore it
as an alternative; I hadn't even known it existed. So, I will likely try
out the trial software to get a demo running and take it from there.

Sometimes it makes sense to spend money on software that is the best
tool
for what you are doing. Some purists might think that all software
should
be free and open source, but the reality of today is that spending some
money on some software while working with open source software where it
is
suitable generally makes the most sense. Autodesk MapGuide Studio is
not
expensive (relative to other commercial IDE type products) and IMHO the
$495
is worth the money. I still use Maestro in the cases where the Autodesk
product is deficient; such as moving or copying resources while
retaining
their relationships.

As Zac mentioned, you can download a fully working 60 day evaluation
copy of
Autodesk Studio (with the MapGuide Enterprise download) at
http://usa.autodesk.com/adsk/servlet/index?siteID=123112&id=10301587.
For
what it's worth, myself and many of my clients work with MapGuide Open
Source using Autodesk MapGuide Studio.

That's unfortunate because Maestro crashes on me rather often... Is
there no other alternative to adding data? This might be a deal breaker
if I must shell out money for Autodesk's Web Studio just to get a
working way of adding data...
