You do realize that ArcSDE runs on top of Oracle don't you?  Also the question was ArcGIS not ArcSDE, two different products...

AFAIK the FDO ArcSDE provider supports versioning, so why not just use it with ArcSDE?

I thought ESRI is doing its own versioning, are you sure about this?
