Got it to work.  But only after I uninstalled the 64 bit version and
installed 32 bit version, as my MS Office apps are all 32bit.

This has me wondering if I have the wrong drivers somewhere on my server. 
Any other ideas would be greatly appreciated.  Server 2008/64, MGE 2011/64 
Win7/64, Excel 2003/32. "FDO Component failure"
