Jackie, 

as a preview of a layer for this featuresource you would see nothing else
then what you would see if you load a single raster file. 

The benefit of this document is that MapGuide can quickly determine which
rasterfile(s) to open for the requested map extent. If you do not have such
a document then MapGuide have to check the location of each file in this
feature source at runtime. Some of my raster feature sources have more than
2500 files.

In short: a Raster Image Catalog offers much faster access to your raster
files.
