Hi,

there is a service called Nabble, which provides an Forum Interface to
mailinglists.

http://www.nabble.com/

http://n5.nabble.com/archive-your-mailing-list.html

I never set up a nabble account for a mailinglist yet, so I'm not sure
how much administration work is involved with that, but quite some oterh
OSGeo mailinglists are already on nabble:
http://osgeo-org.1803224.n2.nabble.com/

Maybe we contact Jason Birch for how to go about this (he seems to be
the administrator of the osgeo lists on Nabble)? I could take care of
this if its ok for you?

regards,
Christian

And maybe mailinglists are not anymore the best way of communication since people (like you) want to respond to stuff that has been posted before they joined, since they can read it online. This is an interesting discussion, and one we have to have as FOSS community, but right now I prefer to stick with OSGeo infrastructure for various reasons.
