Hi Drew,
Normally you are able to reply on any mail on a mailing list which you joined, but I'm not sure how one responds to a mail which has been sent before one joined. Since this list is pretty low volume, just copy the topic and if necessary the body of the mail and start a new one.
I'm curious what you mean with 'I noticed that I am missing discussions on a lot of topics probably due to the settings I applied.', did you join the list and since then missed the discussion?
On a grander scheme of things; mailinglist are a particular way of communication and it's pretty much forward going: you can only respond to messages which have been sent after you joined (AFAIK). And maybe mailinglists are not anymore the best way of communication since people (like you) want to respond to stuff that has been posted before they joined, since they can read it online. This is an interesting discussion, and one we have to have as FOSS community, but right now I prefer to stick with OSGeo infrastructure for various reasons.
Regards Steven
