All that GD stuff was rewritten by Tom P. a year or two ago, hopefully
Tom is still around and could answer questions you may have.

FYI I committed a fix to the AC_CHECK_LIB() call (added -L$GD_LIBDIR)
for the case where an explicit path is provided for GD.
