sderaster.h - version problems?

I tried to build from CVS now, and mapsde.c would no longer compile.
Several symbols are missing (SE_COLORMAP_DATA_TYPE, ...). I checked my
sderaster.h (1.23 1999/10/22 - ArcSDE8), and these constants were not
defined. I found another version of sderaster.h (v 1.43 2003/10/07)
out there and it contained SE_COLORMAP_DATA_TYPE.

Is my old version of ArcSDE no longer supported?
Should there be a version check?
