Is there a preferred WMS-client?

Roland,

  The free stand-alone WMS clients I've reviewed are

1. ArcExplorer v4.0.1 + Interoperability Extension (No longer Available from
ESRI)
2. Jump - Vivid Solutions
3. Gaia - The Carbon Project
4. SIS Map Browser - CadCorp

I haven't looked at the SIS Map Browser capabilities in detail yet but it
looks good...
