Can you please explain what you mean by "mapscript has got it"? I look 
in map.h and don't see any status field in the labelObj definition, so 
what does mapscript have that the CGI or the mapfile doesn't have?

BTW, I would suggest that you file a bug for your RFE... in a few days 
we will all have forgotten about this discussion on the mailing list, 
but bugs don't go away that easily.
