Howard,

I think this is a good idea and I'm inclined to support it. Does this 
need an RFC? are there any mapfile changes, documentation changes, 
autotest files, howtos (already mentioned the vector howto, how about 
the build howtos, others?), are there mapscript implications. I assume 
no backwards compatibility issues.
