I'm wondering if I shouldn't be enforcing a stricter syntax when
parsing the expression.

pros:
backwards compatibility for these expressions if they get more complex some day

cons:
the syntax itself is far from set in stone yet. so backwards
compatibility has a non negligeable risk of being broken anyways.
