Totally agree.  In fact I sent a message to the sphinx-dev google group 
several days ago asking how to hide the TOC in the sidebar...but all 
messages from new users to the sphinx group are held, and mine is still 
held (yikes not too new user friendly lol).  I'll keep trying.
