Brent,

I didn't mean to alter the current behaviour in this regard in order to keep
the required changes as simple as possible. Currently at least one feature
should be retrieved from the data source in order to have the legend item of
this layer displayed correctly. This probem is not yet solved, however it
has already been discovered in http://trac.osgeo.org/mapserver/ticket/26.

Despite of the fact we can use multiple classes the related class is
overridden when the corresponding feature is retrieved from the source.
There's no such option to override only a particular set of the parameters
of each style. However one could use CLASSITEM instead of STYLEITEM to have
better control (in MapServer) on how a class is displayed actually. But this
requires some preparation at the data source so as to attach the proper
class item to each feature.
