Sounds good then- there is a way to hide a mask. Could also use a special status (kinda like QUERYONLY) of MASK or MASKONLY if we wanted to explicitly mark a layer as a mask.

Note that the mask can be anything, point, lines, polygons, or even a raster image, so I don't think there is any way to get away without a valid layer type value.
