If the problem is that opening many files is slow, I'm not sure what can be done
on this. Apart from reducing the number of files by mosaicing the ones that can
be mosaiced. Normally for a display window of reasonable size, you shouldn't
have too have that many files. Except if you zoom out and that no overviews have
been created. And if you create overviews, you should consider creating
overviews not on each tile, but on the mosaic.
