Alpha labeling problems

I've been trying to narrow down the source of the problem a little more. If I
change from TT fonts to bitmap, I can display more labels on a map before it
crashes, but it does still crash. Since the problem seems not to be limited to
TrueType fonts, I'll see if I can use the shp2img interface and bitmap fonts to
try and isolate the problem.
