This is a semi-educated guess as i mostly work with jsp's and swing and not
applets. HOwever i believe
you should not have to worry about java as far as applets go. The applet
class has changed little. The latest stable release will work on all java
browsers.

More info here

Go here to read about it.

I want to get a Java JDK for my RedHat 6.2 Linux box so I can try and make
some changes to the Rosa applet. I want the applet to run in the existing
browsers.

Which Java JDK should I get?
Do I need to worry about Java 1 vs Java 2?
Where should I get it from?

Thanks for any help you can offer,
   -Steve
