Aaarghh.  Never mind...I just realized that by setting IMAGECOLOR, 
BACKGROUNDCOLOR, and COLOR to the appropriate values I can achieve what 
I was trying to do with TRANSPARENT.  Sorry.  Time to go to sleep :-)
