No fix has been made for this.  There has been some discussion of this
on the list.  For the purposes of tracking and ideas I have created a formal
bug report for the problem:

   http://mapserver.gis.umn.edu/bugs/show_bug.cgi?id=512

I have no timetable to fix this.  I would *like* to fix it before the
next major release of MapServer but I wouldn't bet on it unless I have
a paying client.
