If you're running MySQL and everything else on the same box, then you
will certainly benefit from a dual CPU machine. Get as much fast RAM as
you possibly can (i.e. look for a machine that not only has a fast CPU
but fast RAM access). Then buy more RAM. The manufacturer of the CPU
is irrelevant, but get two fast CPUs.

The hard disk is a bit trickier. You will get the best READ performance
with a SCSI RAID-5 array, but that will be expensive. A serial or
parallel ATA RAID-5 array (3ware controllers, for example) will also
work well. However, WRITE performance is much slower on these systems,
so if you go that route you should look to place output files (tmp
images, log files) on a different volume that's not RAID-5.

Then buy more RAM.

Subject: [Mapserver-users] Hardware to support a Mapserver application.

Hi all -

I've developed a Mapscript based application for a customer. He want's
to set up his own 80x86 based web-server for deployment. What kind of
Intel og AMD bassed hardware is optimal for MapServer use ?.

The application is based on win2k, apache 2.0., php, mapscript and with
data in tab files and a alphanumerical data stored in a MySql database
(on the same server).

The server will only be used for this Mapscript apllication. It wil be
used by relatively few users, but each user will result in a fairly
large amount of back-end dataproccesing.

The questions:

CPU - As fast as possible, but which type ?? Intel or AMD ? . Single or
dual CPU ?
Harddisk - SCSI or perhaps Serial ATA ??

regards Bo Thomsen
