The crash described in bug 270 should have been fixed quite a while ago 
according to the bug report. What was "to be revisited" in this bug was 
the enhancements to the legend.

There is currently another problem in version 4.x related to empty 
classes, see bugs 495 and 499:

If that's the bug you ran into, then adding an empty STYLE object or 
setting a color in your CLASS would avoid the crash.
