[Mapserver-users] BEGINNER question : show image with X (coordinates)

First beginner question,=20

In the demo.map sample, there are several references to many GIF files
which throws a few errors.

"(...)This can occur if you have a new version (>1.6(?)) of the GD
library installed which doesn't support GIF images(...)"

I have redhat 8.0 which comes with early release of GD (1.8.4-9). So,
what is the alternative workaround but that permits me to test and view
the demo? If I comment the reference on demo.map, I won't see anything
at all!! (black!!)

#REFERENCE
  #IMAGE graphics/reference.gif
  ...

To workaround this issue, if I convert the GIF to JPEG, will I have the
same functionality of the demo? What are your tip here?
