Screen coordinates of points/symbols

Is there a way to find out the screen coordinates of a point contained in
a layer or the coordinates/bbox of the symbol rendered for that point?
I am interested in knowing exactly where in the image a point I'm drawing
is located so that I can do some animations and other fanciness.
