calculating scale with Javascript?

You might want to use the mapserv.js script I wrote. It was designed for
use with jbox and dbox. At worst it has example code to compute scale
assuming you're managing extents with your own stuff. You can find it at
http://maps.dnr.state.mn.us/javascript/mapserv.js. Look for the getscale
method...
