I recently did exactly this using GIMP. The gradient editor is
excellent, and it was a doddle to define my own smooth gradients
(or use one the many included). I was going to define this in
ArcINFO Grid itself, but the tools were rather ugly.
24 bit GD might be an idea though, as the 8 bit web-browser friendly
output starts to look a bit shabby.

I was just wondering about the coloring possibilities of mapserver in respect to GRIDs. I have an ArcInfo GRID, which is nicely colored using the "stretched" option in ArcMap. Is there a possibility to do the same with mapserver?
