Your expression is good. Look at your variables and watch if you don't have
a $zoom_factor = abs($zoom_factor); somewhere in your code. It looks like
your $zoom_factor is absolute...

this expression:

works properly when ($zoom_factor> 0) it enlarges the map.
but doesn't work properly when ($zoom_factor< 0) it contracts the map.
I will appreciate if anyone helps
