Interval for Grid lines

Hi,

Is there a way to force gridlines to have the same interval in both X 
and Y direction, or force any interval at all?
I don't know how the interval is determined right now, but sometimes I 
get a rectangular grid (i.e. 1000 x 1000 meter), sometimes it's square 
(i.e. 500 x 1250 meter). It seems it depends on the scale which I zoom 
in to, but I'm not sure about that.
