There is a good analysis that Paul Ramsey did a year or two ago that I 
can't put my hands on, but ask on the PostGIS list and I'm sure they 
will point you to is. Overall, it is a pretty unbiased (IMO) analysis 
that was done during a project to assess porting PostGIS to MySQL and 
points out a lot of problems and deferences in the way things work.

I used MySQL for years and resisted moving to PostGIS because I didn't 
feel I had time to learn it. I finally made the jump to PostGIS and I am 
kicking myself for not moving over sooner.

It was not as hard as I had imagined to learn.
It is well integrated with mapserver.
It is very well supported on the PostGIS list - Thanks guys!
You can do amazing things with PostGIS!

Just use Postgres/PostGIS! I still love MySQL and use it for some things 
but I am finding that there is not reason to now that I have migrated to 
PostGIS.
