Find location name

Hi,
We are developing an application for tracking vehicles. Iam using Mapscript
and PHP.
The vehicles sends the location (lat & long) info. This info is sent to the
server and the loation of the vehicles are displayed on a map.

Now i want to find out the area name or closest land mark using the
location info. I dont know how to get this info from the shape files.

Can any one tell  me how to extract this info.
