PHP Mapscript region selection

I don't think you can do it with php only.
That is an applet they are using but you can also do it with JavaScript: http://www.inovagis.org/quickwms/

  I have just started exploring the PHP-mapscript, and got my basic mapserver demo working (display the image, zoom in, zoom out, and pan), Is there a way to select a region and zoom-in? instead of point click zoom? Do I need to have an applet for this?. Can anyone give me a sample php code that does region selection?
