using labelmaxscale with phpmapscript

Hello all. Can someone point me to the syntax for using labelmaxscale with
phpmapscript.

I am using:

$poLayer->set("labelmaxscale",30000);

Which is not returning an error, but it is also not limited the labels to
that scale or under.

Any hints appreciated.
