Mark center of map?

In this case I can't use Javascript or DHTML or even CSS.  The maps are
being served to phones and many of those don't have fully capable browsers,
so I have to do the image manipulation completely on the server side.

I could take the image Mapserver hands me and composite the mark using
netpbm or image magick, but that doesn't help me learn Mapserver.
