Colors for features

Do you have a SYMBOLSET line in your mapfile?  

Something like   SYMBOLSET "/web/maps/myproject/symbols/symbols.sym" 

This should be in the MAP block and contain the path to your symbols.sym
file.

Did that, and seem to be getting the shoreline of the ocean. Do I need
to be doing something with polygons?

Tried to use a style on the roads and got this

Undefined overlay symbol 'circle'

Error opening image file /usr/testfiles/./circle

I see symbols.sym in my directory and it defines 'circle'
