Layer type equals Query and featurequery mode

We are trying to use featurequery mode to return features intersecting with
a selected feature from slayer layer.

On coming across the featurenquery example at
http://maps.dnr.state.mn.us/mapserver_demos/tests46, it appears the layer
have to be set to query type. In the docs, this is defined as "Query only
means the layer can be queried but not drawn."

My question is this. Does the layer have to be set to Query for it to be
queried? Or can it be visible and queried too?

If I wanted only to query specific layers, can I do this with minimal change
to my existing mapfile, but via cgi parameters instead?

Your help is always greatly appreciated.
