Hi there Jennifer,
Just on the off chance, are you trying to create overviews in your tiff
or are you really trying to create internal tiles? My suspicion is that
you really just want overviews (aka pyramids in the esri lingo) to speed
up Mapserver rendering...
If that is the case then you should looks at gdaladdo and specify the
levels you want the overviews to be created. Tiff's should be fine up
to 4 gig. http://www.remotesensing.org/gdal/gdaladdo.html
If you really do want to use gdal_translate to create internal tiles,
then please post the errors you are getting.

Subject: [UMN_MAPSERVER-USERS] gdal_translate question
Hello,
I'm experiencing funny output with gdal_translate and I'm hoping
someone can help me figure out what I might be doing wrong.
I have a 400mb GeoTiff hillshade file. I'm trying to produce
internal tiles. I used this syntax taken from the examples:
gdal_translate -co TILED=YES original.tif tiled.tif
The resulting file has solid grey where there was supposed to be
hillshade and black where there is no data.
If you need additional information please let me know. Perhaps I'm
reaching a file size limitation?
Thanks,
Jennifer
