calculating map extent

Hello All,

If I am using the zoompoint or zoomrectangle functions on a map  
object I can get the extent directly from the map after I create it.   
But if I have an extent and a zoom factor how can I tell what my  
extent will be.

I don't know which resolution map file I want to use and therefore  
can't create the map unless I know the resolution first.
