Map not rendering

Thanks Hester,
Alas that did not fix my problem. My WMS works and has always worked - I'm
not asking 'bout that.
This renders my map, using a wms:
http://myserver/cgi-bin/mapserv?map=/var/www/html/workshop/start3.map&SERVICE=WMS&VERSION=1.1.1&REQUEST=GetMap&LAYERS=mymap
So why won't this work (with the same .map file), just to test and debug:
http://myserver/cgi-bin/mapserv?map=/var/www/html/workshop/start3.map&mode=map
And I HAVE CHANGED my only layer to status DEFAULT!
I have done this before using a .shp file (tiled raster), and it works:
http://myserver/cgi-bin/mapserv?map=/var/www/html/workshop/start2.map&mode=map
So what have I done wrong?
