REGEX in Map file

I think I asked this before, but danged if I can find the answer (or 
even the question) in the archives.

Can I change a CLASSITEM result from "I-94" to "I94" with a REGEX in the 
Mapfile?  If so, how?   I originally accomplished this by adding another 
Column to the data, but I have this nagging memory that there was some 
sort of way to do it in the MapFile itself.

This is for labeling HWY line work with Shield Symbols.
