If it is stored in PostGIS, maybe could you create a view that is the centerpoints of the polys, and then create a new mapserver layer that uses the view as the data source?

Is there some way to define a layer so it will draw a centerpoint for a polygon layer. I could use an annotaion layer type, but in that case, the legend will show the label, and not the point symbol.
