Thanks Bobb, but I believe this will only work for LINE layers (linear
features)?

 

I need the symbol to follow the boundary of a polygon, hence the reason
for creating the symbol.

You can do this within a LABEL block, see here for more info:

HINT: use "ANGLE auto" or "ANGLE follow"
