You must specify the desired shape type as the argument which can be:
MS_SHAPE_TYPE.MS_SHAPE_NULL
MS_SHAPE_TYPE.MS_SHAPE_POINT
MS_SHAPE_TYPE.MS_SHAPE_LINE
MS_SHAPE_TYPE.MS_SHAPE_POLYGON
